thistle hood pattern by butchbaby

Temple Measurement (from widest point to widest point in inches):

Cast on gague * temple measurement stitches using longtail or your favorite stretchy cast on.

Knit until end of row, turn and knit back (garter stitch). Do this until the fabric just barely reaches from the forehead to the crown of the head.

Pick up stitches along the side of the work, knitting as you go.

Knit back and pick up along the other side. Keep working back and forth until you reach desired length (below the ears)

Side note: on mine, I ran out of my original yarn half-way through this step and changed to a yarn with a different gage. To make up for this I changed the size of my needles and kept knitting. I really liked the effect this gave.

When you reach below the ear, start ribbing-- K2P2. Join the sides, casing on enough stitches to fit your head through, while keeping the ribbing pattern.

When the ribbing reaches desired length (2-3 inches), do one row of purls to turn. Then repete the ribbing until they match

Using kitchener or k2tog, join the live stitches with the beginning of the ribbing.

Pick up stitches along the front of the hood and begin 1x1 ribbing. I did 5 rows and then joined with the beginning of the work using k2tog. Do what looks best to you
